Art history professor, street-art documentarian and art lover are just a few words that describe the founder of Art and Seeking , Lizy Dastin. Art and Seeking offers in-person guided tours as well as downloadable audio tours that make L.A.’s world-class urban art scene accessible to everyone.
L.A. is a particularly appropriate host of these tours since the city has been a home to some of the most significant street art since Mexican muralist Siqueiros unveiled his controversial America Tropical on Olvera Street that was soon destroyed by the government. Since then, influential figures, including: Judith Baca, Shepard Fairey, Mr. Brainwash, RISK and Banksy himself have used its streets as their canvas. Unfortunately, most Angelenos and visitors are missing out on this world-class art scene because we don’t know where to look or are speeding right by it on the freeway.
Throughout her life, Lizy has been passionate about story telling. Even when she was a little girl, she would come home and re-teach her mother everything she learned in school that day, thinking up fun games and strategies to keep her student entertained. At the age of 16, she took her first Art History course in high school and fell in love with the subject. Since then, Lizy has earned a Bachelor’s of Art in Art History and English Literature from Wellesley College, a Master’s in Art History, Connoisseurship and the Art Market from Christie’s Education and a Master’s of Philosophy from the Graduate Center, CUNY.
For the past eight years, Lizy has taught traditional, college-level Art History in New York City and Los Angeles and has worked in several museums and auction houses, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and Christie’s Auction House in London. However, she wanted to take her teaching style out of the classroom and onto the streets, connecting with even more people and sharing her enthusiasm for street art and the urban space. Art and Seeking was born out of this passion.
Art and Seeking currently offers tours of the Downtown Los Angeles Arts District, Beverly Gardens in Beverly Hills and Abbot Kinney Boulevard in Venice. Each trip focuses on a single neighborhood with a high density of quality work that can be seen on foot in under an hour and is loaded with insider information she gathers from personal conversations with the artists. On these tours, the work of celebrated artists, such as: JR, Christina Angelina, Shepard Fairey and Vhils, is featured and all different types of formats, from murals to sculptures to stencils to graffiti. Lizy, who is the granddaughter of world famous author, Sidney Sheldon, prepares and narrates each of the audio tours.
Lizy is currently working on several projects for Art and Seeking that include tours of Hollywood and Santa Monica; maps of street art around the city in partnership with the Los Angeles Street Art Gallery; and a store on the Art and Seeking website where people will be able to purchase original and exclusive work from artists featured on the tours.
